THE SHREVEPORT (LA) CHAPTER OF THE LINKS, INCORPORATED HOLDS HEALTH EXPO TO SUPPORT NATIONAL BLACK FAMILY WELLNESS EFFORT

SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA – The Shreveport (LA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will hold a Black Family Wellness Expo on March 16, 2024 in an effort to reduce health and economic disparities and to save and improve lives in the Black community. The local event is a part of The Links, Incorporated’s nationwide Black Family Wellness Expos being held across the country on March 16, which aim to leverage its entire membership in the effort to improve outcomes for Black families.
The Shreveport (LA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is partnering with Ochsner LSU Health System, Black K.A.R.E. and over 40 health providers and community organizations to provide vital health screenings and resources to the community. The Black Family Wellness Expo contributes to The Links National Wellness Expos effort to raise awareness about conditions that shorten or impact the quality of life for those in the Black community. The entire Black family is included, from infant to senior citizen. Some of the issues the health program will address include: newborn and infant care; breast and prostate cancer awareness; chronic kidney disease; heart health; anti-bullying information; blood sugar monitoring and more.

Many of the current programs are implemented in schools within Caddo Parish Public Schools. The Shreveport (LA) Links continue to provide mentoring for over a decade at Caddo Heights

Elementary and have expanded to Bethune-Oak Park Elementary. Programs include healthy eating, proper exercising, career exploration and the establishment of a garden at Caddo Heights. Other programs include donating needed supplies to the hygiene closet at Louisiana State University Shreveport and Southern University of Shreveport, providing programming and donations to Dress for Success, and delivering toiletries to various community nursing and veteran facilities. Community activities involve participating in Voter Registration Drives and the establishment of health fairs in various communities.
